I decided to design a different minor character from La Principessa, one who DOES show up more. The design below is the ‘final’ design of the head of staff, Stassi Cola (and let’s be honest, there is no such thing as a final design in a solo comic creator’s comic), but how I got here was a bit different than the main characters.
Despite her being essentially a housekeeping manager, I wanted her to look ‘regal,’ like someone you wouldn’t want to mess with (which contrasts nicely with the more approachable Mamma Perla in the other post). I was inspired by Madame Giry from the Phantom of the Opera, so I started off with her hairstyle… and I think I ended up making her looking too much like the inspiration. I liked her facial structure and not much else.
I backed away for a couple of days before coming back to exploring her design again. These are really REALLY rough, but I was liking where it was going, especially with a hairstyle that was easier to draw but still felt matronly and ‘regal.’
And for shits and giggles, here’s my WIP of the concept art piece from the top. I ended up not doing a proper linework layer, I just raw-dogged it with a fair bit of clean-up.
